Every store deserves both: the coherence of a platform and the ownership of open source. A world where merchants never have to choose between renting their storefront from a landlord and stitching it together from a dozen vendors.
Mission
Give WooCommerce merchants platform-grade coherence on infrastructure they own: one storefront foundation with forty merchant modules today, deeply integrated commerce modules next, and one hub to manage every store — built and supported by one team, fail-open licensed, GPL at the core, running wherever the merchant chooses.
Hosted commerce platforms sell coherence — one admin, one support line, one upgrade path — and take ownership of the storefront in return. Your data, your checkout and often your theme live on their servers.
Self-hosted WooCommerce sells ownership — and historically charges a fragmentation tax: a dozen plugins, a dozen renewals, nothing tested as one system. Approximate public list prices for a typical merchant stack land around ~$651 / year before the theme itself.
BaseCommerce is the storefront foundation that keeps ownership and removes that tax: forty merchant modules in one theme today, a curated suite and hub as the catalogue grows. We do not invent sovereignty — WooCommerce already gives you control. We complete it by making the stack coherent enough that merchants stop fleeing to SaaS.
Principles
No install base to lean on — so the product has to stand on structural promises you can verify yourself.
BaseCommerce is a WordPress theme. It installs on hosting you choose, under a domain you control, writing to a database you own. We never host your storefront or your shopper data. That is data sovereignty by architecture — not a privacy policy clause on a multi-tenant SaaS.
If a licence lapses, the theme keeps running. You stop receiving signed updates and email support until you renew. We do not remote-disable templates, break checkout, or hold the store ransom — that is a product promise, written into how licensing works.
A longer feature list is not a moat. Established plugins already have years of depth. BaseCommerce wins when modules share context — the same product cards, the same compatibility matrix, the same admin conventions — so merchants stop paying the fragmentation tax of a dozen vendors.
BaseCommerce has not launched. There is no install base, no star rating, and no customer logo wall. Every factual claim on this site is read off the theme source. We would rather under-claim than invent social proof that puts a marketplace application — or a merchant's trust — at risk.
The theme ships under the GPL v3. You can read the PHP, modify it in a child theme, and keep what you paid for even if you never renew. Distribution credentials and signed updates remain with the licence; the storefront code itself is not locked away.
People who chose self-hosting on purpose and are tired of paying for that choice with a fragmented tool stack.
